Why Shopify brands use deposits

A custom sofa or a bespoke ring can take weeks to arrive. Asking customers to pay the full price up front and then wait is a real reason why shoppers hesitate and abandon high-value carts.

In September 2026, Dynamic Yield benchmarks show shoppers abandoned 78% of carts at home and furniture stores, and 83% at luxury and jewelry stores.

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) apps are one way to offer flexible payments. They also bring credit checks, fees and a lender's branding into your checkout. A deposit lets customers pay part now and the rest later, and every payment goes straight to you.

What kinds of products merchants sell with deposits

Every store in the report has at least $100,000 USD in deposit order sales and 100 deposit orders, with data to 15 July 2026.

Most take deposits on made-to-order goods, preorders, and bookings. The biggest groups are furniture and homewares, and events and services.

The full report breaks setup down by vertical. It shows how much of their catalogue merchants put deposits on and how much they ask for.

What changed after merchants introduced deposits

Here's one finding from the report:

Seven in ten merchants in the report let customers decide between paying a deposit and paying in full.

At those 71 stores, 41% of the median store's sales came from customers who chose the deposit option, in its first three months after launching deposits.

Key takeaways for store owners

  • Keep pay in full available. A required deposit limits a product to your Online Store, so offering both options keeps it on sale on every channel.
  • Start from what other merchants use. The report sets out the deposit amounts merchants choose most, and how they split between percentage and fixed deposits.
  • Plan setup before the holiday rush. The report's Black Friday checklist covers how long stores took to start taking deposit orders after installing.
