Building a thoughtful purchase experience

Many shoppers on 1825 Interiors’ Shopify store paused before committing when faced with paying the full price upfront for furniture that was weeks away from shipping.

Offering a deposit purchase option through the whitelabel split payments Shopify app Downpay gave the Australian brand a way to reduce those lost sales for preorder and custom items.

Customers became more confident ordering high-value furniture and decor with lead times, and the company recorded a 20% increase in average order value in only 3 months.

1825 Interiors' story

1825 Interiors was founded by siblings Ben and Celeste Moras and named after their family farmhouse, which was built that year.

Inspired by the furniture business started by their father Ken, the brand specializes in creating family-friendly, sustainable pieces using reclaimed timber.

Production takes place in Australia as well as their manufacturing facility in Vietnam, which was recently certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

With 7 locations across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory as well as their online Shopify store, 1825 Interiors combines traditional craftsmanship with modern retail practices.

The problem: Hesitation at checkout for items with lead times

Customers who hesitated to pay the full price for preorder or made-to-order purchases upfront meant missed sales opportunities.

Ben and Celeste wanted to:

  • Make high-value items accessible with payment options that fit customers' budgeting
  • Reduce friction for customers considering long-lead purchases
  • Maintain buyers' existing high trust in their brand with a transparent process

Securing orders with deposits is common in industries with high-value purchases and lead times, but Shopify doesn't support deposits natively in the online store.

The solution: A smooth deposit process with Downpay

That issue was still hanging over them when Diana, founder of the Shopify partial payments app Downpay and Shopify alum, reached out suggesting an answer.

Soon they had a flexible payment option using Downpay's deposit payment system available for custom and preorder items on product pages (there's also a cart-level deposit option).

Now shoppers can choose if they want to pay a 50% deposit to reserve furniture. The balance is then charged to the card on file once the item is ready to ship.

Why Downpay was the right fit

  • Native to Shopify, using Shopify Admin management and the store's branded checkout
  • Designed for custom and preorder use cases, streamlining operational workflows
  • Maintains customer trust, clearly showing what’s due today and what’s due later
  • Automates notifications and balance collection, informing customers and reducing toil

Customers follow the familiar Shopify Checkout experience, with no third-party logins, credit checks, or loan terms:

Results: Higher-value orders and stronger sales flow

The impact was immediate. After introducing Downpay deposits for items with lead times, 1825 Interiors saw more customers choosing custom or preorder furniture. The partial payment experience gave shoppers the confidence to move forward with larger purchases.

And the change was visible in the numbers:

+20%

Average order value in 3 months

By the third month, average order value across the entire store had increased by 20%.

And compared to the same month the previous year, Celeste says, they saw a whopping 143% increase in AOV.

“Downpay has helped hugely with that giant jump in average sales,” she says.
